Couture  hasn’t reached the point where we’re seeing drool-worthy yoga pants, sports bras, or track shorts on the runway. But, as many companies have proven, there CAN be a beautiful balance between fashionable and practical. A lot of active wear brands will be premiering their collections this summer through their own events, including Adidas with its tweet-powered catwalk hosted by Selena Gomez and Lululemon’s detox event next week.

To kickoff Fashion Week, Athleta showcased their own collection with a high-energy 20 minute show on West 37th Street. With some flashy air acrobatics backed by a vibrant and colorful team of break-dancers, yogis, and gymnasts, Athleta showcased their active wear collection in all its diversity and uses. Their mission? To show the versatility and balanced nature of a new kind of gear that strives to perform in and out of the gym. Their new collection which includes the popular city jogger pants, emphasizes moisture-wicking, light-weight, and most importantly, versatile gear.

From functional purists like Nike to fashion radicals like Junya Watanabe, active wear is having its day and there can only be greater innovations to come. Expect more Fashion Week updates later this week!
